ALEXANDRIA, VA — Many services, agencies and government offices in Alexandria will be closed on Monday for Memorial Day.

The holiday is a time to remember those who have died serving in the U.S. armed forces as well as a kickoff to the summer season. The Alexandria Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 29 at the Rocky Versace Plaza/Alexandria Vietnam Veterans Memorial outside the Mount Vernon Rec Center, 2701 Commonwealth Avenue, Alexandria, VA.

Hosted by the city and Friends of Rocky Versace, ceremony will feature Gold Star Family members, Rocky Versace’s U.S. Military Academy 1959 classmates, fellow service members, high school friends and more. The program will feature the "Star-Spangled Banner," reading the names of the 68 Alexandrians killed during the Vietnam War, a wreath laying, sounding of "TAPS" and singing of "God Bless America."

Some services in Alexandria are closed or modified for the federal holiday on Monday, May 29. Below are the changes to know.

City of Alexandria government offices: Closed on May 29.

Schools: All Alexandria City Public Schools and administrative offices will be closed May 29.

Animal Welfare League of Alexandria: On May 29, the Animal Shelter will be closed. For animal emergencies or wildlife concerns, call 703-746-4444.

Courts: The Alexandria Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, Alexandria Circuit Court, Alexandria General District Court, Alexandria Juvenile Court, Domestic Relations District Court, and the Court Service Unit will be closed May 29.

DASH Bus: DASH bus service will operate on a Sunday schedule May 29. The free King Street Trolley will operate from King Street Metro to Alexandria City Hall every 15 minutes, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Visit dashbus.com for more information.

Department of Motor Vehicles: All DMV customer service centers in Northern Virginia, including 2681 Mill Road in Alexandria, will be closed May 29.

Health department: The Alexandria Health Department, the Flora Krause Casey Pharmacy and the Teen Wellness Center at Alexandria High School will be closed May 29.

Historic Alexandria facilities: On May 29, Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, Freedom House Museum and the Stabler–Leadbeater Apothecary Museum will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. All other City of Alexandria museums will be closed. For more information, visit www.alexandriava.gov/Historic.

Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the local child protective services hotline at 703-746-5800 or the state hotline at 800-552-7096; the domestic violence hotline at 703-746-4911; the emergency services for mental health or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the local adult protective services hotline at 888-832-3858 or the Adult Protective Services State Hotline at 888-832-3858; the suicide prevention hotline at 703-527-4077; and the sexual assault hotline at 703-683-7273.

Impound facility: The city’s impound facility will be closed May 29. The impound facility is closed every Saturday and Sunday, as well as on all observed city holidays. Fees will continue to accrue on Saturdays and Sundays but not on holidays.

Libraries: On May 29, all Alexandria Library branches, including the Alexandria Law Library, will be closed. Visit alexlibraryva.org/locations for more information.

Metro: Metro will open at 7 a.m., closing at 1 a.m. Saturday and midnight Sunday and Monday. On Saturday and Sunday, there will be a Red Line shutdown between Rhode Island Avenue and Fort Fotten and Blue Line late night single tracking between Arlington Cemetery and Pentagon City. Outdoor pools: On May 29, Old Town Pool (1609 Cameron St.)  and Warwick Pool (3301 Landover St.) will be open 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Memorial Pool will remain closed to the public until June 17. Potomac Yard Park Interactive Fountain (2501 Potomac Ave.) will be open on May 29, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Visit alexandriava.gov/Aquatics for more information. Great Waves Waterpark at Cameron Run Regional Park will be open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 27 to 29.

Parking: On May 29, the Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions for metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with signed parking time limits. This suspension of enforcement, which applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces, does not permit parking in any location where it is normally prohibited (for example, no parking zones, loading zones or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary no parking signs will be enforced on May 29.

Recreation, nature, and arts centers: On May 29, Charles Houston Recreation Center and Patrick Henry Recreation Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All other City recreation and nature centers, including Chinquapin Park Recreation Center & Aquatics Facility, will be closed. Trash and recycling: For city collection customers, residential trash, recycling, yard waste and curbside waste food collection will be delayed by one day during the week of Monday, May 29. Virginia Railway Express: VRE will not provide service on May 29 and does not run on weekends.
