Ski Mask Warning To Public Housing Residents Prompts Outcry In Alexandria
After public housing residents received a letter about the law about ski mask ban enforcement, Alexandria's police chief responded.
ALEXANDRIA, VA — A notice sent to Alexandria public housing residents about enforcement of Virginia's ski mask ban caused an outcry, prompting a response from the police chief.
As reported by NBC Washington, Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority residents received a warning about Virginia's ban on wearing a ski mask in public to conceal identity. The letter noted police would enforce the law, which was given leniency during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Some public residents felt the warning was discriminatory. Alexandria Police Chief Don Hayes told NBC Washington that police don't arrest people simply for wearing a ski mask and that it only happens to those arrested for other crimes.
