What's Open, Closed In Alexandria For New Year's 2023
New Year's Eve and Day fall on a weekend, which means some closures will happen on the observed holiday Monday.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — New Year's Day, the holiday celebrating the start of 2023, falls on a weekend. As a result, Monday will be an observed holiday with various closures in Alexandria.
City of Alexandria government will be closed on Monday, Jan. 2. Other services have schedule changes on Monday and surrounding days.

Below are the openings and closures to know for the New Year's holiday around Alexandria:
City of Alexandria government offices: Closed on Monday, Jan. 2.

Alexandria City Public Schools: Winter break is Dec. 19 to Jan. 2.
Animal Welfare League of Alexandria: Open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 31 and closed on Jan. 1. Adoption appointments are available here. For animal emergencies or wildlife concerns at any time, contact 703-746-4444.
Community centers: The Vienna Community Center is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 31, closed on Jan. 1, and open 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 2. Fairfax County's Neighborhood and Community Services centers will be closed on Dec. 31 and Jan. 2.
Courts: Alexandria General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court are closed on Jan. 2.
DASH Bus: DASH will operate on a Sunday schedule on Jan. 2. Regular service will be provided on Jan. 1. The free King Street Trolley operates regular service daily, including holidays, every 15 minutes, from the King Street Metro to Alexandria City Hall, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Alexandria Transit Company administrative offices are closed on Jan. 2.
Department of Motor Vehicles: All DMV customer service centers are closed Jan. 2.
Health department: The Alexandria Health Department, the Flora Krause Casey Pharmacy, and the Teen Wellness Center at Alexandria City High School are closed Jan. 2.
Historic Alexandria: The Freedom House Museum will be open for regular hours on Jan. 2. All museums will be closed Jan. 1. For more information, visit alexandriava.gov/Historic.
Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including holiays. This includes the Child Protective Services hotline at 703-746-5800, Domestic Violence hotline at 703-746-4911, Emergency Mental Health Services or substance use crisis hotline at 703-746-3401, Adult Protective Services hotline at 703-746-5778 or 988, and Sexual Assault Hotline at 703-683-7273.
Impound facility: The city's impound facility is closed Friday, Dec. 30, to Monday, Jan. 2. Fees will continue to accrue on Saturday and Sunday, but not on holidays.
Libraries: All Alexandria Library branches are closed Jan. 1 and 2. Visit the Alexandria Library website for more information.
Metro: Metrorail will be open 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Dec. 31 into Jan. 1. Metrorail and Metrobus will be free after 8 p.m. until closing. Some Metrobus route will be extended until 3 a.m. Metrorail will operate on a Sunday schedule from 7 a.m. until midnight on Jan. 1 and 2. See more information on Metro's website.
Parking: Between Jan. 1 and 2, the Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcing parking restrictions at metered spaces, in residential permit parking districts and in other areas with signed parking time limits. Temporary no parking areas will still be enforced. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces and does not permit parking in any location normally prohibited, such as no-parking zones, loading zones or spaces for persons with disabilities.
Post offices: Closed on Jan. 2.
Recreation, nature, and art centers: Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility, Charles Houston Recreation, and Patrick Henry Recreation Centers will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Jan. 2, and all other city recreation centers and nature centers will be closed. All facilities will be closed on Jan. 1. Torpedo Factory Art Center is open daily, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. but is closed on Jan. 1. Visit alexandriava.gov/RecreationCenters for more information.
Trash and recycling: For city collection customers, residential refuse and recycling will be delayed by one day during the week of Jan. 1. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Recycling Center will be open on Dec. 31 and closed on Jan. 2. Christmas tree collection begins Jan. 3 and continues through January.
