Basketball: SLHS Girls In Regional Semis

A shot by South Lakes junior Caitlin Jensen at the buzzer lifted the Seahawks past Mount Vernon in girls Northern Region basketball play Tuesday night and boosted South Lakes into the Regional semifinals for the first time since 1997.

With seven seconds remaining, senior Gabrielle Schultz grabbed a steal. Sasha Sprei split the defense to find Jensen, who knocked down the final shot and gave South Lakes (22-4) a 46-45 victory.

"I am extremely proud of our team, and the resilience and focus down the stretch," said SLHS coach Christy Winters Scott. "Our last three games have come down to one possession, and I am so excited for our opportunity to extend our season, and compete again on Thursday."

The Seahawks were led by sophomore Princess Aghayere with 11 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two steals. Sprei added nine points and five rebounds. Abigail Rendle added 10 rebounds, seven blocks and five points.

Mount Vernon (22-3) was led by Kelly Loftus with 20 points.

South Lakes will play Oakton in the regional semis at 8 p.m. Thursday at Robinson High School. Oakton is 22-4 and defeated TC Williams 46-36 in its quarterfinal game on Tuesday. The Cougars are the defending VHSL AAA State Champions.
