Reston-Based Nonprofit Hires New Vice President to Lead Affordable Housing Programs
Cornerstones hired Michael J. Scheurer as its new Vice President of Housing and Community Development, effective Monday, July 20.

Cornerstones — a nonprofit organization based in Reston that supports self-sufficiency for those in need of food, shelter and other human services — has announced the addition of a new vice president, effective Monday, July 20.
CEO Kerrie Wilson introduced Michael J. Scheurer as the agency’s new Vice President of Housing and Community Development via a media release on Monday afternoon.
“Mike understands the struggles faced by low-income and working families in our region and brings new ideas and capacity to help us change that picture for the people we serve in the greater Reston-Herndon community,” Wilson said in the release. “His achievements in housing finance and development, as well as his knowledge and network of government, private and nonprofit resources, make him the perfect candidate to expand Cornerstones’ work in housing.”

The release states Scheurer will manage real estate acquisition, development and advocacy activities supporting the preservation and development of affordable housing in the area. He will lead Cornerstones Housing Corporation (CHC), a subsidiary organization that oversees Cornerstone’s existing housing portfolio in addition to seeking new opportunities to expand its work in the affordable housing market.
CHC tackles the need for affordable housing in the region by acquiring, preserving, rehabilitating and sometimes constructing properties for previously homeless and at-risk individuals residing in the Dulles corridor.

Prior to accepting his new position with Cornerstones, Scheurer worked for the Virginia Housing Development Authority, a not-for-profit organization created by the Commonwealth of Virginia to help residents attain quality, affordable housing.
Before that, Scheurer served as Senior Deputy Director of the Fannie Mae Washington Metropolitan Community Business Center, as well as Director at the Multifamily Finance for the National Association of Home Builders.
“Reston and Cornerstones are entering a new and exciting period of possibilities over the next 2-5 years. There are opportunities being created with the arrival of the Silver Line and the resulting redevelopment that will be occurring throughout the Reston/Herndon area,” Scheurer said in the release. “I am very excited to be able to bring a career and experience in all phases of affordable housing to Cornerstones and especially in the community where I have resided for over 30 years.”
Scheurer’s position was previously held by Tim McMahon, who retired in May after 20 years of service.
