Herndon Hosts Meeting on Fairfax County Parkway Transportation Issues

Growing congestion along the corridor is prompting local officials to consider improvements.

HERNDON, VA — The Virginia Department of Transportation is in the midst of a series of meetings on the 31-mile Fairfax County Parkway (Route 286) corridor and the transportation issues along it, and officials began by hearing from residents in Herndon this week.

VDOT, along with Fairfax County, has scheduled three meetings, holding the first one at Fox Mill Elementary School in Herndon on Monday, Nov. 14. They held another in Burke on Wednesday, and will hold a third in Alexandria on Nov. 21.

The meetings centered around a short-term study that assesses "existing transportation issues and developing multimodal improvements that can be implemented within the next one to ten years," according to a statement.

"The project team will also present information about a long-range planning study to accommodate future planned growth and ways to support multimodal transportation options," it adds.

The Fairfax County Parkway section in question runs from Route 7 to Route 1. Herndon and Reston are at the far north end of that corridor.
