Fairfax County Gets National Environmental, Service Awards

Fairfax County has received three National Association of Counties (NACo) 2013 Achievement Awards in the organization’s annual competition.

Awards were given to the library system, the Park Authorityand the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services.

The county’s stream restoration project at Government Center in Fairfax was deemed the best in the competition’s Environmental Protection and Energy category. Material dredged from other ponds was used to restore the stream and pond on the government center property, improving habitat and water quality.

Ultimately, the project will help the quality of the water in the Chesapeake Bay by reducing the amount of phosphorous, nitrogen and sediment flowing into Difficult Run.

Other accolades were awarded to the library system for its Kaleidoscope Storytime program at Chantilly Regional Library, designed for children with autism and other developmental disabilities.
