3 Tips for Setting a Kitchen Remodeling Timeline

Taking on a major remodeling project like a kitchen remodel can be time consuming, so it’s understandable if you’re worried about giving up your space for an extended period of time. However, setting a detailed and realistic timeline can help you prepare for having your kitchen out of commission—and put you one step closer to the kitchen of your dreams.

Here are three tips for setting a realistic timeline for your kitchen remodel:

Take your time with research

It’s easy to want to hit the ground running, but take your time in the early stages of planning your remodel. Do plenty of research on what you want and interview contractors until you find the right fit for your needs and budget.

Don’t rush the design process

Once you have your contractor, you should plan to spend about four weeks going over the design, plans and selection process, then another four weeks in the pre-construction phase: signing contracts, obtaining permits, ordering materials and completing your walk-through. These steps are important to make sure your finished kitchen turns out exactly how you want, so don’t rush through them.

Set clear expectations with your contractor

Even though things don’t always go according to plan, it’s still important to have a detailed scheduled worked up before demolition begins. Talk to your contractor about what you can expect from the process and set up a schedule for each step. For instance, a sample kitchen-remodeling schedule may look like this:

Week 1: Demolition

Week 2: Reconfigure, replumb, rewire, renew

Weeks 3-4: Aesthetic changes, like drywall and new flooring

Weeks 5-8: Cabinetry, counter, tile and appliance upgrades

Week 9: Finishing touches
