About 200 Freeze for Reason at VA Polar Dip

Annual event at Lake Anne Plaza put on by Vienna family raises money for Camp Sunshine for kids with life-threatening illnesses.

About 200 people jumped into the chilly waters of Lake Anne on Saturday for a good cause - Camp Sunshine, a summer camp for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

The sixth annual Freezin for a Reason Virginia Polar Dip had a goal of raising $100,000, which will send 50 Mid-Atlantic familes to Camp Sunshine in Maine this summer.

The freezing part delivered - it was about 29 degrees at jump time 2 p.m. Saturday. It did not stop the superheroes and vikings, clowns and angels and other costumed folks from a dip in the lake.

Each participant raised or donated a minimum of $100 for the opportunity.

The Virginia Polar Dip was started in 2008 by Bill and Gail Toth of Vienna, who first attended Camp Sunshine as a participating family in 1996 when their daughter Jennifer, then age 3, was a cancer patient. Jennifer was celebrating her 20th birthday at Saturday's event.
