Vienna Has a New Wine Shop: 'I Fell in Love with Wine, Cancelled My Plans for Law School'
Joshua Mason says he aims to run his wine business with "small store service at big box prices."
That's a quote from Joshua Mason's email signature. It might tell you a little bit about his passion for his new business.
He recently opened his new wine shop, called The Wine Outlet, in Vienna, at 278 Cedar Lane SE. Patch caught up with him to find out more about the new business. Here are Five Questions with Joshua Mason.
1. PATCH: Tell us a little bit about you and your background.
JM: "I have been in the wine industry since 1999, when I was getting ready to attend law school. I needed a job, so my (then) roommate helped me find a job at a local gourmet shop. Three weeks into the job, I fell in love with wine, cancelled my plans for law school and focused on wine and craft beer.
Since then, I have worked in retail stores, became a weekly columnist in the local paper for wine and craft beer, and even worked in the vineyards in Oregon during harvest."
2. PATCH: Tell us a little about your business and what you offer.
JM: "The Wine Outlet is a store that offers small store service at big box prices. I like to focus on wines that deliver (and sometimes) over deliver for the price. The Wine Outlet offers wine from all over the world, as well as craft beer from, in my opinion, some of the better breweries in the United States and beyond."
3. PATCH: Where did the idea for this business come from?
JM: "The idea for the business stemmed from having a store in an area that is open to wine and beer without having to travel too far. We all know that traffic in the area can be a bit overwhelming, so if I can help customers buy great wine without them having to fight traffic to get to other areas, then everyone wins."
4. PATCH: What do you love most about doing business in Vienna? What made you choose Vienna for locating your business?
JM: "The residents in Vienna that I have met have welcomed this store with open arms and I am grateful for their hospitality. People are genuinely curious about wine and beer and I would like to pass along any and all of my experience in making them feel confident about their purchase."
5. PATCH: What great services/products/specials should locals definitely come check out at your business this year?
JM: "This year, locals should definitely attend my weekly Saturday wine tastings from 1-4 p.m., as well as my craft beer tastings that are on the first Friday of every month from 5-"7ish." I will also do my best to bring in friends that are winemakers to lead special nightly tastings."
