Matthew Neil Johnson, Jr., 65, of Woodbridge, VA passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2014. Butch, as he was known by friends, was born in Washington, D.C. on July 8, 1948 to the late Margaret Doris (Holloway) Johnson and Matthew Neil Johnson of Alexandria.
He graduated from George Washington High School in Alexandria, VA in 1968 and immediately enlisted in the UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS. Immediately following Basic and Advanced infantry training he was deployed to Viet Nam where he completed his tour and military obligation. Butch was wounded in combat and earned a Bronze Star with a Combat V for VALOR while in Viet Nam. Upon his Honorable Discharge he resumed working for the Federal Government and retired from the Department of the Army with 35 years of service.
Butch was a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1503 and he was essential in reviving the Order of the Purple Heart, Semper Fi Chapter 1775. He also had fraternal membership at the American Legion Post 28, the Marine Corps League, Mickey Finn Detachment 333 and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 2165.
Butch is survived by his wife, Louise Johnson, two daughters, Margaret Lynn Lynch of Lexington, SC and Kristen Elizabeth Welsh of Midland, VA. He is also survived by two brothers, Martin Johnson of Clifton, VA and John Johnson of Haines City, FL. Butch is survived by four stepdaughters, Michelle Smith, Angela David, Cynthia Lastuvka, Theresa Shepard and eleven grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Butch will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
A viewing will be held at Miller Funeral Home on Thursday, April 17, 2014 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a service at 7:00 p.m., honoring and celebrating his life. The burial will take place at Quantico National Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 18, 2014. A small reception will be held following the burial at Veterans of Foreign War Post 1503.
