Sumner Mural Restoration Projects Need Community Support

The Sumner Downtown Association is fundraising for mural restoration. For $25, you can sponsor one square foot and sign it with Sharpie.

Almost 20 years ago, artist Paul Cislo painted three murals on walls in downtown Sumner. Due to natural wear and tear, the murals’ condition have degraded over time. The originally planned to restore the worst-off murals by the end of the summer but hit financial roadblocks along the way.

The mural in question is on the side of the on Alder Avenue, which depicts an old-timey parade with a float pulled by horses. Currently, the image is patchy, obscured by a grid of white sealant meant to prevent the mural from further decay.

Executive Director of SDA Arla Holzschuch estimated that the mural would cost $14,000 to fully restore, at $25 per square foot.

The SDA started the project with $3,000 from a maintenance fund, and Holzschuch made arrangements for a fundraiser during . With a donation of $20 per square foot, the donor could sign their portion with an enamel paint pen. But, fundraisers could only garner $75 in donations that weekend.

Now that , donors can receive tax breaks for their donations. SDA hopes that the change will spur future donations to the cause.

β€œSometimes we expect people to donate more than we would ourselves," said Holzchuch.

Muralist Michael Wicks, a 10-year Sumner resident, was selected to restore the downtown murals.

β€œHe was painting 18 hours a day,” said Holzschuch.

His time and work are partially donated, partially paid when the SDA can afford it.

β€œEveryone is trying to pitch in,” Holzschuch commented.

Pending adequate donations, the murals on Main Street, depicting a sawmill and loggers on Elhi Hill, should receive attention next. All of the downtown murals represent a part of Sumner’s history.
