City Seeks Volunteers for Cultural Arts Commission

Editor's Note: The following is a City of Kirkland press release.

----

KIRKLAND, Wash. – The City of Kirkland seeks adult volunteer applicants to fill three vacancies on the Cultural Arts Commission, formerly the Kirkland Cultural Council.  The appointments are for unexpired terms ending March 31, 2013 and will be made by the Cultural Arts Commission.  Interested citizens are invited to apply.  Completed applications must be received by the City Clerk prior to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, September 12, 2012.  Applications are available online at www.kirklandwa.gov, at City Hall, 123 5th Avenue, or by calling the City Clerk’s Office at 425-587-3190.

On July 17, the City Council reaffirmed its commitment to the arts when it passed a resolution redefining the scope of the Cultural Council to focus on public art, and renaming it the Kirkland Cultural Arts Commission. The Council determined, after an in-depth analysis, that the Commission would remain a part of the City and not transition to a non-profit as originally envisioned.

The analysis was initiated in order to review the role of the commission and its future in a way that acknowledged the limited staffing that the City is able to provide, and answered the on-going question of whether it would transition to a non-profit. Members of the Cultural Arts Commission were in support of the final recommendation that the City Council affirmed, and chose the new name to reflect the change. To learn more about the Cultural Arts Commission, visit www.kirklandwa.gov and search “ Boards and Commissions” or contact the City Manager’s Office at 425-587-3001.
