A 15-year-old girl suffered minor injuries after she was struck by a car last Saturday evening, June 9, as she walked up SE 24th Street in the East Seattle neighborhood.

The teenage girl, who lives nearby on the 8200 block of North Mercer Way, was walking uphill on the 6500 block of SE 24th Street near West Mercer Way when a vehicle of unknown make and model swerved out of its lane and struck her from behind, causing minor injuries and abrasions. According to the victim and several witnesses, the suspect's vehicle then swerved back into its lane and sped off. None of the witnesses were able to positively identify the driver, license plate or description of the vehicle. The girl was taken to Overlake Hospital.

Mystery Minivan Causes Fender-Bender on Island Crest Way
Several vehicles were involved in a minor fender-bender as they attempted to turn onto southbound Island Crest Way from SE 40th Street at 6:36 p.m. A 33-year-old resident driving a white Dodge Avenger in the righthand left-turn lane turning left onto Island Crest Way promptly slammed on her brakes after she was cut-off by a minivan — which failed to stay in the neighboring lefthand turn lane and swerved in front of her. A Mini Cooper following the Dodge crashed into the rear of the car, causing minor damage. The 44-year-old man was cited for following to close.

Airbag Causes Minor Burns in South-end Traffic Accident
A 22-year-old Issaquah man driving a Toyota Corolla was stopped on the 8400 block of SE 68th Street, trying to turn into the South-end/ when his car was hit from behind by a Honda Civic driving at an estimated 20 miles per hour. The Honda's airbags released in the crash, causing slight burns to the 24-year-old Valley Village, CA woman, and she was treated on the scene by the . She was later cited for driver inattention.

Elderly Woman Outwits Thief, Gets Purse Back
A quick-witted 81-year-old woman recovered her stolen purse in an attempted theft, asking for its return from the thief while shopping inside the supermarket at around 2:51 p.m. The suspect, described as a black male, 20-30 years old, 6'-6'2" tall, thin build, 150-160 pounds and wearing a black and white baseball cap, a black and white print shirt and dark jeans, had tried to take the purse as the woman was choosing items for purchase and momentarily left her cart unattended. The woman said the man fled in a green 1990s Ford Explorer.

New Charges for Traffic Scofflaw Trying to Escape Court Hearing
A Renton man caused a brief uproar at after he escaped custody while awaiting a pretrial hearing for a 2009 charge for driving on a suspended license. Jared Michael Smith, 24, attempted to flee the area at around 9:33 a.m. but was captured minutes later by police on the 3700 block of East Mercer Way. MIPD officers placed him under arrest, held him overnight at the Issaquah Jail, and then he was later charged by the city prosecutor for obstruction by trying to escape police custody.

Husband, Wife Assault Each Other on Ride Home from Divorce Meeting 
A husband and wife in the process of getting a divorce drove to the after they each assaulted each other at 3:30 p.m. on the way home from a divorce mitigation. The man was driving them in a GM Yukon SUV to their home on the 4200 block of East Mercer Way. Both acknowledge the woman first threw water on the husband, followed by the man pulling her hair. After she struck him in the head with a crutch, the man pushed her back into her seat and drove to the police station. The woman was given a lift home by police and the man agreed to stay at his brother's house and not contact his wife for several days.

Angry Brother Issues Death Threats
A 59-year-old Seattle man made harassing threats over the phone remarks that he would kill his sister, a Mercer Island resident, and her family. His younger brother witnessed the call and contacted police.

Drunken Sandwich Theft Earns Man Ticket, 1-Year Ban From QFC
A drunk 21-year-old Mercer Island man tried to steal a turkey bacon panini sandwich and a roll of tin foil from the just after midnight. The man was detained and cited for shoplifting and banned from the store for one year in a no-trespassing order.
