Two people were found dead early Thursday morning after police and fire responded to a report of an accident that sent a car into the Green River near the 6800 block of S. 180th Street in Tukwila.

The Renton Fire and Emergency Department Dive team responded to the 1:42 a.m. call. Nearly 30 first responders arrived at the scene, including six fire engines, one aid unit, one ladder truck and two Battalion Chiefs with a total of 27 emergency responders.

Responding police and fire officials did not know how many people had been in the car upon impact with the water. While rope and dive technicians assembled a highline system over the river upstream of the accident, two other teams worked downstream to contain the scene and a third team searched the shore.

At one hour-into the search, an underwater video camera confirmed that two victims had been trapped underwater inside the car.

Crews secured the car, which was towed to the shore and removed from the scene.

In addition to Renton Fire & Emergency Services, Kent Fire, Valley Regional Fire Authority, Medic 7, MSO1, Tukwila Police Department and other Police Department agencies also responded to the scene.

The Tukwila Police Department is still investigating the accident, and the two victims have not been named.
