Accused Date Rapist Met Woman Online

A 47-year-old Racine man is accused of date raping a woman he met on a website.

Robert C. Laypath was charged in Racine County Circuit Court Tuesday with one count of second-degree sexual assault. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison and $100,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, on Nov. 26, a woman who met Laypath on a website met him for breakfast at Perkin’s in Oak Creek. The woman had an omelet, then drove with Laypath to his home in the 1900 block of Saturn Avenue.

Around 1 p.m., police say the woman called her daughter while driving saying she didn’t know where she was and didn't know the date. She then pulled into a gravel parking lot in the 8400 block of South Chicago Road and called the Oak Creek Police Department for help.

The woman told officers about the breakfast and that Laypath may have drugged her. She also reportedly told police that on the way to Laypath’s home he seemed to drive in circles as if to confuse her. When the woman told police she was in some pain, they transported her to Aurora Sinai Hospital for further examination.

Police reports indicate the victim gave officers the website on which she met Laypath. They saw the defendant's photo there, and he was wearing a shirt with the logo of a local business. Witnesses there identified Laypath so police went to question him.

According to reports from officers, Laypath admitted to having sex with the woman but said it was consensual.

Laypath is currently being held in Racine County Jail on a $25,000 signature bond while awaiting trial. He will next be in court on Jan. 2 for a preliminary hearing.
