Man Charged With 5th OWI After Being Stopped in Bayside

A 27-year-old Slinger man is facing his fifth drunk driving charge after he was pulled over in Bayside Sunday.

Thomas A. Hellman was charged in Milwaukee County Circuit Court Tuesday with one count of fifth offense operating while intoxicated and one count of operating a motor vehicle with a prohibited alcohol concentration. If convicted, he faces up to six years in prison and $10,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint:

On Sunday a Bayside police officer on patrol saw Hellman driving on northbound I-43, then exit onto southbound North Port Washington Road, then run a stop sign at the end of the exit ramp. The officer pulled Hellman over and immediately noticed the smell of alcohol.

Hellman failed a field sobriety test and had a blood alcohol level of 0.19, which is more than twice the legal limit to drive in Wisconsin.

Hellman was previously convicted of drunk driving in 2007, twice in 2010 and once in 2011. He’s currently being held in county jail on $6,000 bail.
