Drunk Driver Headed to Get Kids, Police Say

A woman arrested for drunken driving at three times the legal limit on Feb. 5 told police she was on her way to pick up her friend's two children from a local elementary school.

The woman failed sobriety tests and registered a 0.24 blood alcohol concentration during a Breathalyzer test, police say.

According to the police report:

An officer running radar in front of the Fox Point Police Department at 3:31 p.m. Feb. 5 saw a vehicle driving east toward the station, then turn north into the southbound lane of traffic on North Santa Monica Boulevard, and continue driving on the wrong side of the road.

The officer turned on his emergency lights and siren to conduct a traffic stop. The driver stopped, but then backed up past the officer, prompting the officer to turn and attempt to get behind the car again. The driver then drove off, and the officer followed for a block until she finally stopped in the 500 block of East Community Place.

When the officer went to talk to the driver, and told her she should have stopped, the police report states she responded with "I didn't see you, I'm trying to get to Stormonth school."

The officer smelled alcohol and asked the woman if she had been drinking. She said she had one pint of Paul Mason and was on her way to pick up her friend's two children from school.

The woman later told police she had been consuming alcohol in the car, though police didn't find liquor in the vehicle.

She was also cited for wrong-way driving and operating without insurance.
