Underground Fire in Milwaukee; Man Injured by Gunfire ; Standoff Ends Peacefully; Man Drowns at Hotel; Power Outage

Underground Fire in Milwaukee

About 700 people had to be evacuated from the Wisconsin Center this afternoon on a report of an underground fire in the sewer system under Sixth Street. The Milwaukee Fire Department said there was a build up of smoke and pressure, which blew off two manhole covers. Some business lost power during the incident after WE Energies cut power to the area for safety.

About 1,000 WE Energies temporarily lost power Tuesday afternoon. A majority of the outages were in the New Berlin/Muskego area in Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties, with about 700 more in various neighborhoods near the city.

Man Injured by Gunfire

Milwaukee police are investigating a shooting that occurred Monday near Teutonia and Locust. A 30-year-old Green Bay man was shot around 9:45 p.m. The victim went to an area Milwaukee Fire Station near Teutonia and Locust and was transported to a hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Police say the man was shot in an apparent drug deal gone bad.

Standoff Ends Peacefully

Police responded to a shots fired call in the 3400 block of W. Mill Road around 7:40 p.m. on August 1. As the officers moved towards the scene, they saw a subject, who upon seeing the officers, fled into a nearby factory. For the next couple of hours, officers engaged the subject in verbal dialog working towards a peaceful resolution. Around 12:10 a.m., the subject was taken into custody without incident or injury to officers or the subject. The subject, a 23-year-old Milwaukee man, was arrested on an outstanding felony warrant. The investigation into the original shots fired call is ongoing.

Man Drowns at Hotel

A man reportedly drowned at a Milwaukee hotel Tuesday afternoon, according to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office.The incident reportedly happened at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Best Western in the 5100 block of S. Howell Ave., near the airport.
