Hartland Man Arrested After Firing Gun, Reporting Himself

A 49-year-old Hartland man is in jail after firing a gun while attempting to get back some items allegedly stolen by a 30-year-old Port Washington woman. The man is an executive at Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co., according to JSonline.com.

The responded to a call at the at approximately 3:05 p.m. Monday that the man, Darryll L. Fortune, was in their lobby wishing to report the discharge of a firearm.

The investigating officer met with Fortune, who explained that Arletha R. Hurt of Port had stolen personal items belonging to him from his vehicle, including a watch, while at a hotel in Milwaukee over the weekend, according to a press release from the police department. Fortune reported that he had corresponded with Hurt over the weekend regarding his missing items and she eventually texted him, telling him to come and get them. Fortune then drove to Hurt’s apartment complex parking lot located on Portview Drive in Port Washington on Monday afternoon to retrieve his property.

A discussion took place in the parking lot between Fortune and Hurt, according to the release. Hurt initially denied having possession of Fortune’s missing items and wanted to know what else he had to exchange for the watch.

No one was injured, but Hurt told reporters with the Journal Sentinel that Fortune also grabbed her hair, throwing her onto the hood of his car.

Fortune was able to retrieve his missing watch as well as his money clip from Hurt and then left the parking lot, according to the press release from the police department.

Fortune then drove to the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Department lobby where he reported the incident. As a result of the incident and Fortune’s actions he was arrested and taken into custody for carrying a concealed weapon, first degree recklessly endangering safety, and disorderly conduct. Formal charges are pending with the Ozaukee County District Attorney’s Office.
