Lt. Hingiss Chosen as Port's Next Police Chief

Police and Fire Commission members decided he was the right fit, and hope he also reorganizes internal structure to utilize the other chief candidates.

The Police and Fire Commission has named Port Washington Lt. Kevin Hingiss as the department's next police chief.

He will start on Jan. 1, and will make $86,000 as a starting annual salary. He begins the day after current Chief Richard Thomas retires.

"We just thought he was the right person for that job at this time," Police and Fire Commission Chairman Rick Nelson said. "We recognize the strengths of (internal candidates) Mike Davel and Mike Keller ... I think what you’ll see once Kevin has been installed as chief — I think what he will do is make some organizational changes to better utilize Mike Davel on the operations side."

That move, Nelson said, will allow Keller to "what he does so brilliantly," on the information technology, budget and administration side of things.

Hingiss was not immediately available for comment on Friday morning.
