10 Arrests Made at Sylville Smith Memorial Site in Milwaukee's Sherman Park Neighborhood

It had been two weeks since Sylville Smith was shot and killed by Milwaukee police. Neighbors called police when a rowdy group assembled.

Milwaukee, Wis. -- Several arrests were made by Milwaukee police at the same site where 23-year-old Sylville Smith was fatally shot by Milwaukee police during a previous incident in what is now known to the public as Milwaukee's embattled Sherman Park neighborhood.

At about 8:00 p.m., multiple MPD squads responded to a group of subjects who were disturbing the neighborhood one block north of Sherman Park at 44th and Auer. Residents of the neighborhood reportedly phoned police about the disturbance and when part of the group refused to leave, 10 arrests were made in total.

MPD advised the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office deputies that the law-abiding citizens living in the area were complaining about a group of rowdy people doing drugs and disturbing their neighborhood at the intersection of 44th and Auer, and that the crowd could move towards Sherman Park.

The perimeter of Sherman Park was secured by deputies. The park has been closing four hours early, at 6:00 p.m., since the rioting several weeks ago, preventing any gathering of those seeking to ruin the quality of life in the Sherman Park neighborhood and protecting the Boys and Girls Club property.

The crowd was contained by MPD one block north of Sherman Park and it was reported that MPD made several arrests.

Smith Shot by Police

The unrest, and subsequent lengthy rebuilding process follows the shooting of Sylville K. Smith, 23, who ran from police on Aug. 13 during a traffic stop. Smith was carrying a loaded gun stolen from Waukesha with 23 rounds. He was shot twice by a police officer.

Damage Done

According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives the damage from fires set in the Sherman Park neighborhood over the weekend is expected to exceed several million dollars.
Fires at eight locations are currently under investigation by the ATF in conjunction with with local and state law enforcement agencies.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the ATF is offering rewards of up to $10,000 for anyone with information on the blazes, while many business owners are deciding whether or not to rebuild
