Editor's Note: The following column was provided to Patch via a news release from the Chabad Jewish Center of Waukesha. Hanukkah started Dec. 8 and continues through Dec. 16.

Chanukah – the Festival of Lights – for many Jewish people it brings back fond memories of childhood years and serves to renew their sense of identity. The Chanukah lights symbolize warmth, joy, strength and inspiration. Such is the purpose of a community-wide celebration to be held at the Waukesha County Courthouse this Chanukah.

The Chabad Jewish Center of Waukesha is inviting the entire community to celebrate the Festival of Lights at a public Menorah kindling ceremony. The grand Chanukah celebration will take place on Monday, Dec. 10, at 5 p.m. in front of the Waukesha County Courthouse.

County Executive Dan Vrakas will attend the ceremony and will assist in kindling the giant “Menorah of Freedom”. Following the kindling, the program will feature hot potato latkes (a signature holiday pancake), fresh doughnuts, music, chocolate gelt (coins), crafts for kids, draidels, and menorah kits.

Chanukah, is highlighted by the kindling of the Menorah each night of the holiday.

“This Menorah is the ultimate display of joy and unity,” said Rabbi Levi Brook, Director of Chabad of Waukesha. “It contains a universal message for people of all faiths—that ultimately, good will triumph over evil, freedom over oppression, and light over darkness.”

In its Chanukah outreach campaign, Chabad of Waukesha joins thousands of Chabad centers across the globe that are staging similar public displays of the Menorah and its symbolic lights. From the “National Menorah” standing in front of the White House, to “The Largest Menorah in the World” (32 feet high) which stands in New York City’s famed Rockefeller Center, to the Menorah Celebration at Bayshore Mall!

Join Chabad in a public display of unity at this exciting Menorah Lighting Ceremony. Bring the kids and make this your special Chanukah celebration.
