Wrong-Way Driver Faces OWI Charge After Crashing Into Semi

A wrong-way driver is facing prosecution for an operating while intoxicated-causing injury citation after crashing into a semi-truck at an undetermined speed, according to the Waukesha Police Department.

The accident happened near Avalon Drive on East Moreland Boulevard at 12:32 a.m. Thursday. The semi-truck was traveling westbound and a BMW was traveling eastbound in the westbound lane. The semi driver saw the BMW coming toward him and was stopping. However, the head–on collision occurred, causing minor injuries to the 68-year-old semi-truck driver.

The 52-year-old driver was transported to Froedtert Hospital via Flight For Life, and is currently in stable condition, according to the Waukesha Police Department. He had received a broken hip, numerous contusions and facial cuts in the accident. The BMW driver admitted that he had consumed intoxicants before the crash, according to police.

No other people were involved in the crash.

The semi-truck driver was cooperative with police and voluntarily submitted to a blood test. Police do not believe the truck driver was impaired.

The BMW was totaled and the semi truck, which was not carrying a load in the trailer, received moderate damage. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
