Man Cited for Shooting Birds, Squirrels in Back Yard

The sight of dead, bullet-stricken birds and squirrels has become too much to bear for some residents on the far west end of the village.

A resident called police at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 20 to report a neighbor on Day Avenue near Lydell Avenue has been shooting squirrels and birds. Police responded to the house to talk to the 73-year-old man, who said he had shot multiple birds and squirrels with a .177 caliber pellet gun from an open window in his house.

The man told police he recently invested in a nice bird feeding area, and to preserve his expensive bird feed, he has been shooting and killing unwanted birds and squirrels that try to eat the food.

The man told police he did not know it was illegal to discharge a firearm in the village. He said he only shot at animals on the ground, as to not have a stray round hit any people or houses.

Police cited him with illegal discharge of a firearm.
