BIRMINGHAM, AL -- Many Alabamians have not seen rain in the state for weeks, and with record-breaking high temperatures seen almost daily during the last month, drought conditions in the state have become worse.

Areas in the northeast and southeast parts of the state are listed by the National Weather Service as Extreme Drought areas, as well as a portion of Shelby County.

Severe to Moderate drought areas can be found in all sections of the state, while the entire state has been deemed "Abnormally Dry."

Birmingham meteorologist James Spann said not to expect any real change Friday, although heat levels will back off a few degrees, with highs in the low to mid 90s.

Spann said some showers are expected this weekend, and some cooler temperatures. "We have a chance of showers and a few thunderstorms statewide Sunday as moisture levels continue to rise and the air aloft becomes cooler.," he said. "Temperatures will remain below 90 degrees statewide Sunday."
