McDonald's Shooting Near Auburn University Leaves 1 Dead, 4 Hurt

AUBURN, AL — A shooting early Sunday at a McDonald's near Auburn University left one man dead and four people hurt. It happened just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday on the 200 block of West Magnolia Avenue. Local police officers who had already been in the area at the time to break up a large crowd confirmed shots were fired and found several victims, police said.

A 20 year-old Tuskegee man was found dead at the scene with what looked like multiple gunshot wounds. Four other victims — a 17-year-old boy, a 19-year-old woman, both of Opelika, and a 21-year old Auburn University student from Hilton Head, South Carolina, were hurt by gunfire, police said. They were rushed to East Alabama Medical Center by ambulance. All are expected to survive.

A 16 year-old Opelika boy was airlifted to Piedmont Columbus Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

Early indications are that an altercation broke out just before an exchange of gunfire.

An investigation remains ongoing. Police do not believe this was random shooting.

Auburn University sent out an emergency alert saying there was no evidence of any "active threat to the campus community." The university previously said the suspect was at large but police didn't give any information about a potential suspect.
