Birmingham airport approves major runway rebuild, new parking guidance system (abc3340.com) — Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is rolling out a high-tech parking guidance system and rebuilding the final 2,000 feet of Runway 24, projects starting design this fall and construction in 2027. Expect real-time parking availability signs, a space-finding app, and months of shortened-runway operations, mostly funded by federal and state dollars and involving several Birmingham-based contractors.
2. 'One of a kind' leader of Homewood non-profit has died at 71 (al.com) — Birmingham-area residents are mourning Tricia Kirk, the longtime leader of Homewood's Exceptional Foundation, who died Saturday at 71. A Birmingham native and former special-education teacher, she expanded the nonprofit's services for people with disabilities and leaves a legacy honored through a namesake award; visitation and services are Friday in Mountain Brook.
3. US Blind Golf National Championship comes to Birmingham (cbs42.com) — Blind and visually impaired golfers from across the country are in Birmingham this week as the U.S. Blind Golf National Championship tees off Wednesday at Highland Park Golf Course. After a skills clinic on Tuesday, competitors and coaches are using guides and adaptive techniques to help more blind residents enjoy the game and compete at a high level.
4. Flock Safety tightens camera policies amid concerns over privacy, police use (wbrc.com) — Birmingham residents are hearing new concerns about Flock Safety license-plate cameras as the company tightens policies after reports of police misuse, including in Alabama. A Birmingham-based privacy advocate warns that neighborhood groups and HOAs using these cameras raise broader questions about surveillance, data access and how much information can be collected on everyday drivers.
