📰 News we're reading

• Birmingham Police Department partners with federal agencies to combat crime, boosted by $440K grant (wbrc.com) — Birmingham Police say a strengthened partnership with federal agencies has helped cut homicides by 73% since 2024 and secure more than $440,000 in new federal funding. The grant, part of $1.3 million for Alabama's Northern District, will support ongoing efforts to reduce violent crime and expand community safety initiatives across the Magic City.

• Stray Dog Outsmarts Rescuer For 71 Days By Escaping Every Trap Set For Him (thedodo.com) — A Birmingham dog rescuer spent 71 days trying to catch a wary stray living in a Walmart parking lot, repeatedly outsmarted as he escaped every trap. After weeks of patient feeding and acclimating him to a larger trap, she finally captured the pup she named Wally, brought him home, and ultimately adopted the once-skittish dog into her family.

• The Woman Behind Dr. King's 'Letter' Is Getting Her Due (wordinblack.com) — Birmingham's pivotal role in civil rights history is back in focus as a new foundation honors Willie Pearl Mackey King, the SCLC staffer who typed Dr. King's "Letter from Birmingham Jail" from smuggled scraps. The effort, based in Maryland, aims to preserve her story, support scholarships, and connect younger generations to the movement that once centered on Birmingham's segregated streets and jails.
