Birmingham officials tout federal partnership as crime declines (al.com) โ Birmingham police say a deepened partnership with federal agencies has helped drive a reported 73% drop in city crime since 2024 and more than doubled local cases sent for federal prosecution. The collaboration, part of Chief Michael Pickett's 8-Point Crime Reduction Plan, has brought new DOJ grant money and expanded involvement from agencies like the FBI, DEA and U.S. Marshals Service.

2. GSA opposes judiciary property control bill over courthouse maintenance risks (tradersunion.com) โ Birmingham's Hugo Black Federal Courthouse is being used in Washington as a cautionary example in a fight over who should control federal courthouse properties. GSA argues that when the judiciary managed the Birmingham building, maintenance backlogs and safety issues ballooned, a key point in its push to keep property authority and avoid higher taxpayer costs.

3. Federal grant expands health care options to rural Alabama community (al.com) โ A new federal grant is helping expand community health care in Fayette, while additional New Access Point awards are also supporting clinics in Birmingham, Huntsville and Centreville. For Birmingham-area residents, this investment means more primary, women's and behavioral health services are coming to underserved parts of Alabama, with details on specific Birmingham locations expected as planning continues.

4. Proposed data centers could use more electricity than all Alabama homes combined. Who will pay? (wbhm.org) โ Birmingham residents are at the center of a statewide fight over massive new data centers and who will ultimately pay their huge power bills. A 300โmegawatt data center already under construction in Birmingham and another proposed near Westover raise concerns that Alabama Power's secretive contracts could shift costs onto regular customers despite public promises and a temporary rate freeze.
