Today's riddle: What has a neck but no head? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Birmingham neighbors await action on overgrown lots, standing water (wbrc.com) — Neighbors in Birmingham's Jones Valley community say overgrown lots and a storm drain holding standing water near Hemlock Avenue have gone unresolved for more than a year despite repeated 311 calls. The city says the properties are a declared public nuisance moving through weed abatement, but residents remain worried about rodents, snakes, and children's safety around the stagnant water.
2. Greater Birmingham Humane Society to move animal care operations (wbrc.com) — The Greater Birmingham Humane Society is shifting its animal care operations into Jefferson County's new Animal Care and Control facility on Sidney Drive, promising larger kennels, fresh-air access, and better disease control. With nearly 29,000 animals taken in last year, leaders say this long-awaited move will ease a countywide animal crisis while a separate lawsuit over a proposed Nebius AI factory in Birmingham proceeds independently.
3. Birmingham Classic brings HBCU traditions to Legion Field (wvtm13.com) — Birmingham's first-ever HBCU Football Classic kicks off today at Legion Field, with Alabama State facing Southern University at 2 p.m. Fans have been tailgating since Thursday, filling the stadium grounds with music, grilling, and school spirit as both fan bases celebrate and welcome visitors to Birmingham.
4. Building P.O.P.: A closer look at Poetry on Peter's rise and impact (fultonneighbor.com) — A fast-growing Atlanta poetry and music showcase, Poetry on Peter, expanded to a Birmingham location in 2025 and is now building its own creative community here. Founder Miyana Sarver describes P.O.P. as a space where emerging artists gain confidence, live backing, and loyal audiences, with plans to grow beyond Atlanta and Birmingham while keeping artist control at the center.
