Birmingham Youth are Invited to Lead Climate Solutions Through Bloomberg Philanthropies Fund (birminghamtimes.com) — Birmingham residents ages 15–24 can now apply for microgrants of $1,000–$5,000 to launch local climate and environmental projects through Bloomberg Philanthropies' Youth Climate Action Fund. The City will provide funding plus mentorship and technical support for ideas that address youth engagement, nature-based solutions, healthy homes, or public health, with applications due by October 9, 2026.
   

2. Southbound Food Festival Returns to Birmingham, Brings Plethora of Culinary Talent to Town September 18 to 27 (birminghamtimes.com) — Birmingham food lovers can mark their calendars for the Southbound Food Festival, returning Sept. 18–27 with dinners, tastings, art, and live music at Pepper Place, Sloss Furnaces, and other local spots. More than 100 chefs and beverage pros, including James Beard winner Frank Stitt, will headline events ranging from a Heritage Dinner to a juke joint–inspired Funk Brunch.
   

3. Back to School and AI: UAB Offers Tips for Parents to Guard Children's Exposure (birminghamtimes.com) — Birmingham parents can tap into advice from University of Alabama at Birmingham experts on how to guide kids' use of AI at home and in the classroom. The piece stresses learning alongside children, setting privacy boundaries, and encouraging fact-checking. It also suggests using platform guardrails and open conversations so local students build healthy, confident habits with rapidly evolving technology.
   

4. Bron Breakker Spears Alabama Comedian in Front of His Home Crowd on RAW (wrestlezone.com) — WWE RAW's latest stop in Birmingham featured a rough hometown moment for Alabama comedian Matt Mathews, who was speared by Bron Breakker after a run-in with The Miz and Kit Wilson. The segment turned a lighthearted local-celebrity appearance into a dramatic in-ring beatdown. Wrestling fans around Birmingham will recognize the show as Monday night's big live event in town.
   

5. Airport goodbyes return to the gate with new TSA PreCheck program — but not in Birmingham (wvtm13.com) — A new TSA PreCheck program called Gateside lets approved visitors without tickets accompany travelers to the gate again, but Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport isn't offering it yet. More than a dozen airports already participate, and TSA plans to expand, so Birmingham families still have to say goodbye at the checkpoint while hoping the option comes here soon.
