City council condemns blighted Birmingham church near school despite owner's plea (al.com) — Birmingham's City Council has ordered the long-neglected former Powderly Baptist Church across from Jones Valley Elementary to be demolished as an unsafe public nuisance. Despite the owner's plea for more time to pursue grants and convert it into a science and technology center, the building's severe disrepair and long vacancy led officials to move ahead with condemnation.
2. Fourth suspect in deadly Hush Lounge mass shooting appears in court (wbrc.com) — Birmingham readers following the deadly 2024 Hush Lounge mass shooting case now have an update: the fourth suspect, 22-year-old Aaron Jones-Turpin, appeared in a Jefferson County courtroom for a preliminary hearing and remains jailed without bond. He faces four capital murder and 17 first-degree assault charges tied to the Five Points South shooting that killed four people and injured 17 others.
3. Woodlawn church asking for water to be restored by Central Alabama Water months after court orders utility to do so (wbrc.com) — A Woodlawn-area church in East Birmingham is still without running water months after a judge ordered Central Alabama Water to restore its meter, leaving volunteers hauling buckets so services can continue. The utility says the church hasn't replaced exterior piping or posted a $30,000 bond, while church leaders argue they need the meter first and believe the bond is already paid, highlighting ongoing tensions after the state's takeover of Birmingham's water system.
4. Jade Powers: Meet Birmingham Museum of Art's Curator of Contemporary Art (birminghamtimes.com) — Birmingham residents are about to see a major new exhibition, "Roll Call: Two Hundred Years of Black American Art," opening September 26 at the Birmingham Museum of Art and running through January 17, 2027. Curator Jade Powers, who moved to Birmingham last year, helped expand the project into a 432-page publication and exhibition highlighting the museum's nationally significant collection of Black American art.
5. Wu-Tang Management Shares Business Advice, Life Lessons with Birmingham Youth (birminghamtimes.com) — Birmingham youth involved with the RESTORE program and Housing Authority got rare, up-close advice from Wu-Tang Management leaders during a talk at High Dive HiFi Lounge before the group's local show. Mayor Randall Woodfin joined the event, where John "Mook" Gibbons and Ray Acosta shared business, branding and life lessons aimed at helping young Birmingham artists and students see real paths into creative careers.
