1. Huntsville approves $400K to help homeless, at-risk families (waaytv.com) — Huntsville has approved more than $400,000 in emergency grants to local nonprofits that support people experiencing homelessness or at risk of losing housing. Seven organizations in Huntsville and the surrounding counties will use the funds for shelter operations, rapid re-housing, prevention, outreach, and data tracking, with monthly reporting back to the city.
2. Murder trial continues for Madison County man charged in tow company owner's death (whnt.com) — Jurors in Huntsville are hearing detailed testimony and video in the murder trial of Madison County resident Warren Siao, accused of killing tow company owner Jayson Click during a 2023 repossession attempt. Investigators, deputies, and a medical examiner described the shooting, autopsy findings, and bodycam footage. The trial is ongoing, with more witnesses expected as proceedings resume Wednesday morning.
3. Birmingham nonprofit on Time 100 list; A&M says it will offer state's first AI degree; Construction of Gadsden Athletic Center underway; Innovation center opens in Dothan (businessalabama.com) — Alabama A&M University in Huntsville plans to launch what it calls the state’s first standalone bachelor’s degree in artificial intelligence this fall, potentially drawing more tech-focused students to the city. The same statewide roundup notes a Birmingham nonprofit making Time’s 100 most influential companies list, plus major new facilities underway in Gadsden and Dothan.
4. Huntsville man sentenced for illegal possession of a firearm (whnt.com) — A Huntsville man has been sentenced to 46 months in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. Huntsville Police found the handgun under a child’s car seat during a 2023 stop near Butler Terrace, after discovering multiple warrants and a suspended license.
