1. Huntsville moves toward possible lawsuit against fire truck manufacturers (waff.com) — Huntsville's city council has hired an outside law firm to explore a possible antitrust lawsuit against three major fire truck manufacturers, citing long waits and higher costs for new trucks. The move could affect how quickly Huntsville upgrades its fire fleet, especially after waiting three years for a truck now expected in spring 2027. Manufacturers deny any wrongdoing, and no lawsuit is filed yet.
2. City of Huntsville offering funding for Mill Creek façade improvements (huntsvilleal.gov) — Huntsville is offering façade improvement grants up to $24,999 for eligible commercial and mixed-use properties in the Mill Creek district, with owners covering just 10% of costs. Funded through HUD Community Development Block Grants, the program supports exterior upgrades like painting, windows, lighting, signage, and accessibility improvements. Business and property owners within the defined Mill Creek boundaries are encouraged to apply online or contact Community Development soon.
3. Huntsville police partner with FBI to tackle threat assessment (whnt.com) — Huntsville's police department is teaming up with the FBI's Birmingham field office to spot and manage potential threats earlier across local schools, businesses, and public spaces. City Council has formally created the Tennessee Valley Threat Assessment and Threat Management Team, which will coordinate with Huntsville City Schools and other agencies, adding behavioral analysis and mental health resources to traditional policing tools.
4. License plate readers spark privacy debate in Huntsville as police defend their use (rocketcitynow.com) — Huntsville police are defending their growing use of Flock license plate reader cameras as residents question how closely the technology can track their movements. HPD officials say the cameras only capture plates for 30 days and help reduce crime, while some locals argue the system amounts to mass surveillance and want more say in how it's used.
5. UAH researcher wins major award + has minor planet renamed in his honor (hvilleblast.com) — A Huntsville-based space scientist at UAH just earned one of the world's top space science honors, the 2026 COSPAR Space Science Award, recognizing his decades of research. Dr. Gary Zank also had an inner-belt minor planet renamed 21039 Zank, cementing his legacy far beyond Huntsville's campus.
