1. $10 million 74,000 square feet manufacturing facility opens in Huntsville (al.com) — A new $10 million Victory Sweepers manufacturing facility has opened on Green Cove Road in south Huntsville, with plans to grow from 31 to about 75 employees over three years. City and county leaders say the 74,000-square-foot plant will boost local manufacturing, support production of commercial sweepers and neighborhood electric vehicles, and signal continued economic momentum for south Huntsville residents.
2. Residents voice opposition to Huntsville's use of Flock cameras: 'I don't want to be surveilled' (al.com) — Huntsville residents packed a City Hall forum to challenge the police department's use of Flock license plate cameras, arguing they threaten privacy and constitutional rights despite reported drops in major crime. City officials and police leaders defended the roughly 200 ALPR systems as vital tools for catching suspects and finding missing people, while stressing the Flock contract will be reevaluated before its 2027 expiration.
3. Trail of Tears Motorcycle Ride to impact Huntsville traffic Saturday, Sept. 19 (huntsvilleal.gov) — Expect major traffic delays across Huntsville on Saturday morning as thousands of motorcycles in the Trail of Tears Commemorative Ride move along U.S. 72 and I-565 with police escorts. Huntsville Police will temporarily close ramps and stretches of the route between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., so plan extra time, use caution near riders, and consider alternate routes.
4. Huntsville leaders meet to discuss next steps for Von Braun Center expansion (rocketcitynow.com) — Huntsville officials are moving key legal and administrative steps forward for a major Von Braun Center expansion, funded largely through a tax increment financing district that won't raise existing property owners' taxes. City leaders hope to have paperwork, deeds, and contracts in place soon so construction can begin as early as December, with project phases expected to take three to four years.
5. Memorial Parkway northbound overpass at Mastin Lake Road now open (whnt.com) — Northbound traffic on Memorial Parkway now uses the new overpass at Mastin Lake Road in Huntsville, easing congestion after a three-year, $35 million project. Left-turn lanes and southbound overpass lanes remain closed for now, so drivers should still expect construction activity and use caution while ALDOT finishes barriers, lighting, and prepares to open the southbound side by mid-October.
