1. Stolen money returns to Huntsville youth sports league, thief avoids prison time (waff.com) — Huntsville's Eastern League has recovered $73,000 embezzled by city employee Heather Spier, who received two years' probation and no prison time under state sentencing guidelines. League leaders say the repaid funds, partly made up of city stipends and thus taxpayer dollars, will soon be returned to the organization as parents help decide how the money should be used.
2. Huntsville kickball league rallies around teen battling rare cancer (whnt.com) — A Huntsville kickball league is organizing a charity tournament at the Kiwanis soccer field on Oct. 18 to support player Jeremy Crews' 17-year-old son Gideon, who is battling a rare cancer. League members have rallied around the family with ongoing emotional support, and Gideon hopes to attend and even play in the fundraiser while continuing treatment in Memphis.
3. White House nominates Lt. Gen. David Miller to lead U.S. Space Command (waff.com) — Huntsville is set to gain even more prominence as U.S. Space Command advances its headquarters move from Colorado Springs to Redstone Arsenal while preparing for new leadership under nominated commander Lt. Gen. David Miller. The change comes as the Pentagon reshapes top military ranks and considers a new base elsewhere, positioning Huntsville residents at the heart of major national defense decisions.
4. DSI's Loitering Munitions Systems Summit Returns to Huntsville This December (unmannedsystemstechnology.com) — Huntsville will host DSI's Loitering Munitions Systems Summit Dec. 16–17, bringing senior military, industry, and academic leaders to town to discuss the latest in drone and loitering munition technology. Local defense workers and contractors may find networking, panels on AI-enabled systems, and discussions of global drone warfare trends especially relevant to Huntsville's growing defense sector.
5. Texas beach volleyball season begins at home against TCU (thedailytexan.com) — Huntsville will host top college beach volleyball pairs Nov. 6–8 for the AVCA Pairs National Championships, bringing Texas and other major programs to town. As Texas opens its fall season and chases another strong NCAA run, local fans can look forward to seeing elite beach volleyball competition right here in Huntsville.
