1. 3 detained after robbery at Parkway Place Mall (rocketcitynow.com) — Police detained three people after a Friday night robbery at Parkway Place Mall, a major shopping spot for Huntsville residents. Officers quickly used suspect descriptions to locate and question them on Sparkman Drive, and the investigation continues, so expect a visible police presence and stay alert when visiting the mall.
2. Downtown Rescue Mission asking for donations as shelves run 'critically low' (whnt.com) — Huntsville's Downtown Rescue Mission says its pantry shelves are "critically low" just as the holiday season approaches and is urgently asking residents for canned and other nonperishable foods. You can drop off donations daily at the Evangel Drive campus or any of the six thrift stores, or give online or via the Amazon wish list to support hungry neighbors.
3. Laptops donated to Boys & Girls Club of North Alabama chapter (whnt.com) — Students in Huntsville's Cavalry Hill neighborhood now have 10 new laptops at their Boys & Girls Club, thanks to a donation from Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. The computers will help kids without home technology keep up with homework, supported by District 1 Councilwoman Michelle Watkins and dozens of fraternity members at a celebratory event.
4. UAH + AAMU both report growth in freshman classes (hvilleblast.com) — Freshman classes are growing at both the University of Alabama in Huntsville and Alabama A&M, signaling strong momentum for local higher education. UAH reports a 4.6% freshman increase and stronger academics, while AAMU welcomes about 2,200 first-time freshmen from dozens of states and several countries, boosting Huntsville's role as a regional college town.
5. Couple Went to the ER as Fiancés and Left as Newlyweds: A 'Frightening Day Turned' into a 'Romantic Ending' (newsbreak.com) — A visit to Huntsville Hospital's emergency department turned into an impromptu wedding when staff helped patient John Como and his fiancée Diane notarize their marriage certificate right in an exam room. Nurses and attendants added flowers, cupcakes, paper rings, and a 'Just Married' sign, showcasing the compassionate side of Huntsville's busiest ER.
