Mobile Fire-Rescue Department investigates Belvedere St. residential fire (utv44.com) β Mobile Fire-Rescue crews responded before dawn Thursday to a house fire on Belvedere Street, where one resident escaped but was treated for smoke inhalation and taken to a hospital. Firefighters knocked down flames in the bedroom and living room within about 25 minutes, and investigators are still working to determine the cause and damage estimates.

2. $9 million award clears way for first phase of Brookley by the Bay (mynbc15.com) β A fresh $9 million state award is jump-starting phase one of Brookley by the Bay, bringing a new waterfront park with trails, play areas, and parking closer to reality for Mobile residents. With additional city funding, officials expect to bid the project soon, finish construction in about a year, and eventually add an amphitheater overlooking downtown.

Mobile Planning Commission shoots down mobile home park's controversial rezoning bid (fox10tv.com) β Mobile's Planning Commission has unanimously rejected a rezoning change tied to a big expansion of Sea Pines Mobile Home Park off Dauphin Island Parkway, keeping a 133-unit cap in place for now. Neighbors argued hundreds of additional residents and vehicles would overwhelm the area, while park representatives say they still hope to revitalize the community.

Local nonprofit working to revitalize historic Mobile cemetery (wkrg.com) β A grassroots nonprofit is leading a major cleanup of historic Oaklawn Cemetery in Mobile, where many local families, Tuskegee Airmen, and Buffalo Soldiers are buried. With nearly $30,000 in grants and donations, including support from the Mobile County Commission, volunteers are clearing overgrown graves so descendants can find loved ones and better honor the city's history.

5. 5 Thing To Do This Weekend: Aug. 21-23 (wkrg.com) β If you're staying in Mobile this weekend, you can choose between the 8th Annual endITnow Family Day at Cathedral Square and the Sisters for Life Wellness Expo at the Convention Center, both happening Saturday. The roundup also flags free fishing fun in Pensacola, live music in Gulf Shores, and a Community Safety Day at OWA in Foley.
