1. Major road into Mobile's Brookley airfield expected to close in October (al.com) — Drivers in Mobile should prepare for Michigan Avenue, a key route from I-10 into Brookley Aeroplex and the future Mobile International Airport, to close sometime in October for roundabout construction. Airport officials say shutting the intersection completely will speed work needed before the new terminal opens in 2027, with Broad Street and Perimeter Road serving as alternate access during the project.
2. Mobile City Council approves $1.95M for Taylor Landing affordable housing development (mynbc15.com) — Mobile's City Council has approved nearly $2 million more for the Taylor Landing affordable housing project near Oaklawn Homes, closing a key financing gap. Council President C.J. Small says the plan will replace the troubled 1010 Baltimore Street site with 70 new homes, most reserved for current Oaklawn residents, with construction expected to last about 18 months once underway.
3. Bus drivers demand more pay at Mobile County Public School board meeting (wkrg.com) — Mobile County school bus drivers pressed the school board Wednesday for higher pay, saying many must work multiple jobs to get by. Union leaders compared their wages to neighboring systems, while board President Sherry McDade promised to review finances with the superintendent and CFO but offered no clear timeline for possible raises.
4. Electric air taxis 'just a matter of when,' says Alabama airport leader (al.com) — Mobile's airport chief says electric air taxis could be flying from local airfields like the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley within about five years, once regulations and infrastructure catch up. He's pushing early planning for vertiports, charging stations, and air-traffic rules so Mobile can link with destinations like Orange Beach when this new form of travel arrives.
5. Confrontation at Mobile Airbnb 'sparked full-on gang shootout,' officer testifies (fox10tv.com) — A Mobile detective testified about a chaotic gang-related shootout at a May party in an Airbnb on O'Donnell Street, where Daniel Franklin was fatally shot while fleeing. A Mobile County judge ruled there is enough evidence to pursue murder charges against four local teens, while defense attorneys argued prosecutors lack reliable witnesses tying their clients to the gunfire.
