At its annual meeting, a national urban-planning expert praised Mobile's downtown progress but urged leaders to pair big projects like the planned arena with more entry-level housing nearby, so workers and customers can actually live close to the places they support.
2. Family business blends Cajun, Caribbean flavors at Continental Kitchen (fox10tv.com) — A Mobile family is growing their Cajun-and-Caribbean-inspired catering company, Grub 2 Go, while working out of the Continental Kitchen, a shared commercial space helping launch small food businesses. The incubator has already supported more than 65 ventures and offers 24/7 access, event space, and business guidance. Leaders say they plan to expand as Mobile grows and seeks more diverse food options.
3. Mobile drivers should expect lane closures at Old Shell Road and Florida Street (wkrg.com) — If you drive through Old Shell Road and Florida Street, expect lane shifts and flaggers starting Sunday as Mobile's Public Works crews repair a damaged storm drain inlet and concrete. Westbound traffic will move into the turn lane and northbound drivers will be guided around the work area through Monday's concrete pour, so plan a little extra time and watch for workers.
4. Mobile District christens vessel Joshua Ellsworth to honor excellence (miamiherald.com) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Mobile District has christened the survey vessel Joshua Ellsworth at its Irvington Site Office, honoring a longtime inspector who lived and worked around Mobile's waterways. The 20-foot workboat will support shallow-draft surveying and channel maintenance across Gulf Coast projects, while keeping Ellsworth's legacy of safety, service, and family ties to the Mobile District alive on local waters.
