Today's riddle: What is clean when it is black and dirty when it is white? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Mayor pitches new TIF districts as 'game changer' for Mobile's future growth (al.com) — Mobile leaders are weighing two new tax-increment financing districts that could channel future property tax growth into redeveloping the south waterfront and other underdeveloped neighborhoods. City officials say expanded TIF authority, recently granted under state law, could fund streetscapes, blight removal, and infrastructure without raising tax rates. A public hearing on the proposal is set for October 27.
2. Medical students partner with Dwell Mobile for annual Wellness Fair (southalabama.edu) — Mobile residents, including many refugee families, just benefited from Dwell Mobile's annual Wellness Fair, where Whiddon College of Medicine students offered health education, screenings, and translation help. Local partners like the Lions Club of Mobile and the Mobile County Health Department joined in, with activities for kids and ongoing English-learning support aimed at building a healthier, more connected community.
3. USA Health: Spirit of Children fundraiser (fox10tv.com) — USA Health Children's & Women's Hospital in Mobile is again benefiting from the Spirit of Children fundraiser, which donates a portion of Spirit Halloween sales in Mobile, Baldwin, and Pensacola to child life programs. Shoppers using special coupons or the GIVING26 code get a discount while supporting therapy tools, sensory equipment, and even the hospital's new full-time facility dog, Rainier. Donations have topped $400,000 to date.
4. HGTV says the best public park in Alabama is in downtown Mobile (thebamabuzz.com) — Bienville Square in downtown Mobile has been named Alabama's best public park by HGTV, spotlighting its Mardi Gras ties and recent post–Hurricane Sally renovation. The 200-year-old square now hosts concerts, weddings, Kids Days, and major Mardi Gras festivities. Its shady trees, fountain, and refreshed paths continue to make it a favorite gathering spot for locals.
5. Mobile shoppers stock up on supplies ahead of Isaias landfall (wkrg.com) — Mobile County shoppers are crowding local grocery stores to stock up on water, bread, canned foods, and generators as Isaias approaches the Alabama coast. Managers at Greer's CashSaver on Cottage Hill Road say they've ordered extra truckloads of essentials and remain well supplied. Residents are focusing on items that don't require cooking in case of power outages.
