• New interactive Gopher Tortoise exhibit coming to Alabama Nature Center (wsfa.com) — A new interactive Gopher Tortoise Habitat Display, funded by Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, is coming to the Alabama Nature Center’s NaturePlex near Montgomery, giving residents a hands-on way to explore the longleaf pine ecosystem. The exhibit will highlight the tortoise’s role as a keystone species and feature kid-friendly conservation lessons, with construction expected to wrap up by the end of 2026.    

• Two Alabama hospitals just 24 miles apart: Both in crisis, but not for the reason you may think (dothaneagle.com) — State lawmakers meeting at the State House in Montgomery are grappling with a worsening financial crisis facing rural hospitals, including facilities in Bay Minette and Atmore. The story highlights how decisions made in Montgomery affect access to care just miles apart in south Alabama, underscoring the stakes for patients, providers, and taxpayers statewide.    

• Governor Ivey Signs HB527 Into Law, Providing Overtime Tax Deduction (calhounjournal.com) — A new law signed in Montgomery creates a temporary state grocery tax holiday and lets eligible workers deduct up to $1,000 in overtime pay from Alabama income taxes. The grocery tax pause runs May through June 2026, with the overtime deduction applying to tax years 2026–2028, aiming to ease financial pressure on families statewide.
