1. Metro Atlanta man sentenced for $14K US Treasury stolen check fraud (wsbtv.com) — A federal fraud scheme that started with stolen U.S. Treasury checks cashed at post offices around the Montgomery area ended in a 125-mph police chase through local neighborhoods. The Marietta, Georgia, man involved has now been sentenced to five years in federal prison and ordered to repay more than $14,000, underscoring the serious consequences of mail theft and dangerous flight from police.
2. 20 Years Later: Family of missing Montgomery mother pleads for answers (wsfa.com) — Twenty years after Montgomery mother Aubrina Mack vanished walking to a neighborhood store, her family is still pleading for answers and better communication from investigators. Her now-adult daughter and relatives describe the lasting emotional toll and say they want closure, even just a confirmed resting place. Anyone with information could help bring long-awaited peace to a Montgomery family.
3. Alabama Sees Continued Job Growth and Rising Wages in July Economic Data - Alabama Department of Labor (alabama.gov) — State officials in Montgomery report that Alabama added 20,400 jobs over the past year, with especially strong gains in leisure and hospitality and health care. July's unemployment rate ticked up to 3.4%, but construction and manufacturing wages hit record highs, signaling continued strength in some of the state's better-paying sectors.
4. Gov. Kay Ivey Announces 28 Appointments to Alabama Boards and Commissions (abc3340.com subscription) — From her office in Montgomery, Gov. Kay Ivey has named or reappointed 28 people to a range of Alabama boards and commissions that influence health care, agriculture, environmental rules, education, and public service. These appointments shape how key statewide programs are overseen, including the Statewide Health Coordinating Council, Environmental Management Commission, and several professional licensing and advisory bodies.
5. Starting Sept. 1, credit card fees will be exempt from sales tax under new Alabama law (wsfa.com) — A new Alabama law taking effect Sept. 1 will stop charging sales tax on credit card transaction fees, a change discussed from the Capitol in Montgomery. Lawmakers passed Senate Bill 221 after retailers sought clarity, and officials say the shift could gradually save consumers money statewide. Some legislators worried about reduced revenue, but the bill won bipartisan support.
