1. Dauphin's, Las Floriditas restaurants coming to downtown Montgomery (1819news.com subscription) — Two well-known Mobile concepts, Dauphin's and Las Floriditas, are headed to downtown Montgomery, taking over part of the former Capital City Club space in RSA Tower. Retirement Systems of Alabama officials say the casual fine dining restaurant and Cuban-style speakeasy should boost the building and city nightlife, though no opening date has been announced yet.
2. SEIB executive committee recommends first premium increase in 11 years (aldailynews.com) — State employees and retirees in Montgomery and across Alabama could soon see a $20 monthly health insurance premium increase and higher co-pays if the State Employees Insurance Board approves an executive committee recommendation next week. The board will meet Thursday at 201 Union Street in downtown Montgomery, where leaders will weigh the hike, benefit changes, and a request for more state funding to stabilize the plan.
3. California Gov. Gavin Newsom visits Montgomery (waka.com) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom is spending two days in Montgomery, meeting Mayor Steven Reed, local leaders, and Alabama State University students while touring key civil rights sites. His visit, the first stop on a multi-state "Take It Back" tour, is giving Montgomery residents a chance to discuss housing, jobs, healthcare, and the city's recent progress directly with a potential 2028 presidential contender.
4. Outdoor Alabama Photo Contest is now open (alreporter.com) — Montgomery residents can currently see a free retrospective of Outdoor Alabama Photo Contest winners from 2021–2025 at the Georgine Clarke Alabama Artists Gallery downtown through September 25. At the same time, entries are open statewide for the 2027 contest, which highlights Alabama's wildlife, parks, and scenery, with winning images set to tour the state next year.
5. Knapp Selected as First Flag Football Coach (waka.com) — Faulkner University in Montgomery has named longtime Eagles coach and alumnus Chuck Knapp as the first head coach of its new women's flag football program, which will begin competition in the 2027–28 academic year. University leaders say he is already recruiting locally and hope the team will quickly become a strong addition to Faulkner's women's athletics.
