1. Montgomery Interpretive Center to Host 'Seven Sisters, Still, Sowing Seeds' Event (nps.gov subscription) — A free civil rights program is coming to Alabama State University's Montgomery Interpretive Center on October 13, featuring seven women who were active in the movement. They'll share personal stories from the 1960s and 1970s and offer college students a chance to connect for mentoring and community outreach experience, all starting at 11 a.m. on campus.
2. Report: Montgomery Police Department switches to encrypted… (1819news.com) — Montgomery's police department has switched its radio traffic to encrypted channels, saying the move will better protect residents, officers, and sensitive investigations while still sharing information through official updates. The change comes as lawmakers failed to pass minimum staffing requirements and after a violent Labor Day weekend in Montgomery that left ten people shot and one person dead.
3. Academy of Craft Training opens Central Alabama campus (waka.com) — Montgomery now has a new Academy of Craft Training campus on Wetumpka Highway, offering local 11th and 12th graders hands-on preparation for commercial construction careers. Nearly 190 students from nine districts are already enrolled, gaining skills in trades like electrical work, HVAC, welding, and plumbing, with internships and safety certifications aimed at launching them into the workforce next May.
4. Alabama to honor veterans lost to suicide (waka.com) — Montgomery residents are seeing a powerful flag display at the Biscuits' DABOS Park today, honoring 150 Alabama veterans lost to suicide in 2024. The Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs' Operation We Remember campaign is touring the state to raise awareness, connect veterans with support, and remind communities of their role in preventing future tragedies.
