Mountain Brook School Board Approves Budget

MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL — The new fiscal year for Mountain Brook City Schools begins in just a few weeks, and the Mountain Brook Board of Education has now approved the upcoming year's budget.

In a meeting Sept. 11, the board approved a budget that projects $56.7 million in general fund expenditures, with 84 percent of that total going toward personnel costs. The school system expects $56.5 million in general fund revenues, with 59 percent of that total coming from local sources and 38 percent coming from the state.

A Village Living report said the new budget, which takes effect Oct. 1, also includes $845,000 for capital projects. According to Chief School Finance Officer Kari Austin, those projects will be determined at a later date.

Austin said MBS is projected to finish FY 2020 with a $12.9 million balance in the general fund.

The city goes to the polls Sept. 24 to vote on a new ad valorem tax which will increase property taxes 10 mills, and will go toward some of the capital projects slated for the near future. If approved, the increase would generate an additional $6 million in annual revenue for the school system.
