Mountain Brook Schools Receive Top Grade

The state report cards were released this week, and while the state received a 'B' grade, Mountain Brook was an A+.

MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL - The state report for public schools was released Friday, and the state received a decent 'B' grade overall, while Mountain Brook City Schools received top scores in all six of the system's schools.

The state overall received a score of 80 - or a B - and Mountain Brook received a score of 98. The individual schools were graded:

  • Brookwood Forest Elementary: 99
  • Cherokee Bend Elementary: 100
  • Crestline Elementary: 99
  • Mountain Brook Elementary: 99
  • Mountain Brook High School: 98
  • Mountain Brook Junior High School: 99

The grades are based on the 2017-2018 school year. All schools were graded on:

  • Academic achievement: Schools must meet the 95 percent participation rate for all students and subgroups
  • English language proficiency: Progress towards English proficiency on state assessment – WIDA ACCESS for ELLs 2.0
  • School quality or student success: Attendance – rates of chronic absenteeism

Elementary and middle schools were graded based on:

  • Academic achievement: Proficiency on state English language arts and math assessments – Scantron Performance Series
  • Other academic indicator: Student growth on state English language arts and math assessments – Scantron Performance Series

High schools were graded on:

  • Academic achievement
  • Proficiency on state English language arts and math assessments – ACT exam
  • Student growth on state English language arts and math assessments – ACT Aspire and ACT exam
  • Graduation rate
  • Four-year adjusted cohort graduation rate
  • Five-year adjusted cohort graduation rate
  • School quality or student success: Meeting any of the following college- and career-readiness milestones.
  • Scoring 18 in English, 22 in math, 22 in reading or 23 in science on the ACT exam; scoring 3 or higher on an AP exam; scoring 4 or higher on an IB exam; or earning a silver certificate or higher on the ACT WorkKeys exam
  • Attaining college credit or a career and technical education industry credential
  • Enlisting in the military
