ALDOT Spring Clean Targets Roadside Litter Across West Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Crews with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) will take to roadways across the area this week as part of the agency’s fourth annual Spring Clean initiative.

The coordinated cleanup effort is scheduled for Friday, April 17, and will involve all eight ALDOT districts within the West Central Region.

Crews will collect litter along state highways in an effort aimed at improving roadway conditions and promoting community pride.

The annual event is part of ALDOT’s broader campaign to raise awareness about the environmental and financial impacts of littering.

According to the state agency, Alabama spent $9.67 million on litter cleanup during the 2025 fiscal year — funds officials say could otherwise be directed toward road and bridge maintenance.

“We take pride in the communities we serve, and that includes keeping our roadways clean,” said Lyndi Blackburn, assistant engineer for ALDOT’s West Central Region. “Efforts like this help protect the environment, and it’s only through everyone’s help that we can truly make a difference.”

ALDOT is also encouraging residents to take part by organizing or joining local cleanup efforts, properly disposing of trash and setting an example for others.

Environmental officials note that litter can have long-lasting consequences. For instance, the National Park Service says a single plastic bottle can take up to 450 years to decompose..

ALDOT’s West Central Region includes Bibb, Chilton, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Marion, Perry, Pickens, Sumter, Tuscaloosa, Walker and Winston counties.
