Tuscaloosa's Whitney Neal announced the event in a social media post Thursday, inviting the community to gather Saturday morning at Snow Hinton Park.

She described the event as a brief show of unity and support for the family of Ada Chapman Doss, the 27-year-old nurse killed Tuesday during an attempted robbery at DCH Regional Medical Center.

As Patch previously reported, investigators believe Doss was killed due to a random act of violence by a man suffering from mental illness.

Doss' suspected killer, 41-year-old Matthew James Taylor, allegedly attempted to rob Doss before shooting her in the hospital parking lot.

Taylor has been charged with capital murder and remains jailed without bond.

“This will be a community prayer gathering to support her family and friends and to let them know that Tuscaloosa cares and is thinking of them during this time of grief,” Neal wrote. “She was a loving mother, daughter, friend, and coworker whose life touched many.”

The gathering is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 16, at Snow Hinton Park off McFarland Boulevard.

Neal said Pastor Matthew Wilson will lead the event.

Neal encouraged residents from Tuscaloosa and surrounding communities to attend, saying the event is intended to bring people together during a time of mourning and reflection.

“We have to stand together and stand for what’s right,” Neal wrote.
